I-376 (Route 60) closings

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced temporary lane closings that began Thursday on Interstate 376 in Neshannock Township. That road was formerly called Pa. Route 60.

Crews will be drilling for pavement core samples between the Pulaski Road overpass to just north of Kings Chapel Road. Single-lane closings in both directions will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 21.

PennDOT advises motorists to use caution, slow down and expect changing traffic patterns in the area.

To check on traffic conditions on major roads, motorists can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone.

Fire injures residents

NILES — A man and woman were treated at an area hospital for smoke inhalation after their home at 308 Maple Ave. caught fire about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Niles firefighters extinguished the blaze and contained it to the upstairs bedroom where it started, officials said.

The fire apparently began when bedding fell on top of a space heater, a Niles fire department report said. A smoke detector alerted the couple to the fire.

The residents tried to put out the fire with water from the bathroom but were overcome by smoke and were on the front porch when firefighters arrived.
