Firefighters host fundraiser

The Poland Firemen’s Association is sponsoring “Christmas at Our House” and is seeking cash donations to help local families during the holidays.

All proceeds collected will be used to create gift baskets with nonperishable food, gift coupons for perishable food and toy baskets for Poland families.

All basket items will be purchased at local businesses.

Donations can be made by checks payable to The Poland Firemen’s Association, Inc and mailed to 111 S. Main St. Poland, OH 44514.

Book club plans holiday festivities

Not Your Ordinary Book Club will be at the Poland Library for an afternoon of activities related to “The Nightmare Before Christmas” by Tim Burton.

The book club will play games and make crafts at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and all children in grades second through fifth are invited, even if they haven’t read the book.

Holy Family presents seasonal show

Students at Holy Family will perform in a holiday concert at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Children in kindergarten through fourth grade will sing seasonal songs in Holy Family Church.

McKinley Elementary has food drive Students at McKinley Elementary are collecting all types of non-perishable foods, in addition to gloves, hats, scarves and coats until Friday. Items can be brought in by students and placed under one of the Christmas tress located in the school’s main foyer. The donations will be taken to the local Poland Interfaith Food Pantry and then given to families in need.

The Poland Library will host two Baby Brilliant programs this week for children of various ages.

“Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Book” is for babies ages 6 to 23 months and will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday. “Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s” is for children ages 2 to 3 and will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. “Fun Time for 4s and 5s” is also on Thursday, but at 1 p.m.

During all of these programs, the library will provide developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and other activities aimed to help children grow as readers. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Local kids collect ‘koins’ for hospital Students at McKinley Elementary School and Poland Middle School joined more than 20 other schools in the tri-county area to fundraise for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. Handel’s “Koins for Kids” campaign will benefit the hospital, and participating schools were sent paper snowman ornaments to use in fundraising efforts. The school that raises the most funds in each county, based on a percentage raised versus school enrollment, will receive an ice cream social and a DJ for a school dance.

The campaign ended Dec. 11, but results won’t be released until late December, said JoAnn Stock, director of development at Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley.

Santa’s Workshop arrives at Union The Parent Teacher Organization at Union Elementary will host a Santa’s Workshop this week at the school.

Children may shop for up to 10 people on their list, and all items at the workshop cost no more than $1.

The PTO will also provide funds for children whose families may not be able to send money with them to school, said Principal Carmella Smallhoover.
