A fire that broke out early Wednesday morning at a Canfield apartment complex led to a brief evacuation and sent one person to the hospital.

Shortly after 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, the Canfield Fire Department received a call about a fire in Building 201 of Carriage Hill Apartments, 386 Fairground Blvd.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and the flames were put out within 15 or 20 minutes, said Fire Chief Robert Tieche.

The fire began in the kitchen of apartment 204, and the occupant of that apartment was not critically hurt, but was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment of minor burns, he added.

Smoke was in the hallways on the second and third floor of the building, and also got in some of the apartments, Tieche said. However, the residents were allowed back in the building after the fire was extinguished.

“The only apartment that was not livable was the apartment where the fire started,” he said.

The fire chief had no estimates of the damage at press time.

The Carriage Hill complex consists of seven buildings, and each building has 24 apartment units.
