Canfield trustees
CANFIELD — Township trustees have decided against meeting a second time in December and instead will reorganize during a meeting at 1 p.m. Jan. 4 at the township hall, 21 S. Broad St.
The January meeting will be the first for incoming trustees Marie Cartwright and Tony Bettile, elected in November to full terms. They replace J. Randy Brashen who was defeated, and William D. Reese who did not seek re-election.
Trustee Martha Zarlenga has been in office since Nov. 23, after unseating Richard Puerner earlier in the month, filling his unexpired term.
Jabali planned
YOUNGSTOWN — The 10th annual Jabali (The Rock) African Cultural Celebration sponsored by Youngstown State University’s Africana Studies Program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center.
Mayor Jay Williams is the keynote speaker, and the topic will be “Youngstown On the Rebound.”
Dinner will feature various traditional African dishes. The Harambee Youth Group and the African Student Union will provide entertainment. Admission is $25 per person, ($10 for YSU students) and $175 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at the door or reservations may be made by calling (330) 941-3409 or 941-3097.
Girl attempts suicide
STRUTHERS — A 16-year-old girl told a police officer who pulled her out from in front of traffic Tuesday that she was trying to kill herself.
Several people called police around 2:30 p.m. to report the girl, who was walking south on Fifth Street and jumping in front of oncoming cars, a police report said.
An officer found her walking west on Elm Street at Sixth Street and took her to the police station. Her mother left work to get her, telling police she would take her to a hospital.
Man faces arson charge
GROVE CITY, Pa. — A par-ishioner of the Church of the Epiphany is charged with arson in a Sunday morning fire that destroyed the parsonage next to the Episcopal church on state Route 173.
Arrested Tuesday was Philip Joseph McCamey, 38, of Marigold Lane, Slippery Rock, Pa., who was arraigned before District Judge D. Neil McEwen in Grove City and lodged in Mercer County jail under $50,000 bail.
Damage was estimated at $100,000 in the 7:57 a.m. blaze, which was fought by the Pine Township Volunteer Fire Department and investigated by the State Police Fire Marshal’s Office.
Toys For Tots
BOARDMAN — The Shops at Boardman Park have joined with the Marine Corp’s Toys For Tots campaign this year to help the area’s needy children.
They began their toy drive early in November with a shopping trip to Kohl’s. Working with Kohl’s, the Shops purchased $2,500 worth of toys to kick off their campaign. Shops stores have been collecting toys since Nov. 21 and will wrap up their toy drive this weekend.
The Shops will build a mountain of toys in the tent in the parking lot, rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Customers are encouraged to participate by dropping off a new unwrapped toy at the tent in the parking lot. The first 50 people to donate a new unwrapped toy will receive a free gift from the Shops at Boardman Park. Area carolers will perform. Free popcorn and hot cocoa will be provided.
Medical/dental facility
WARREN — One Health Ohio will have a news conference at 9:30 a.m. Monday to announce the opening of a new medical/dental facility at 1977 Niles Road S.E.
It will be the second such facility in Warren for One Health Ohio, providing healthcare particularly to the uninsured or underinsured.
