Complex evacuated when fire breaks out

CANFIELD — An early-morning fire resulted in the evacuation of an apartment complex on Carriage Hill Lane.

Chief Robert Tieche of the Cardinal Joint Fire District said the fire began just before 1 a.m. Wednesday at the Carriage Hill Apartment Complex inside a resident’s kitchen.

Tieche said the apartment occupant was an elderly woman. He said she was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Boardman Campus to be treated for minor burns then released.

Tieche said the building, which has 12 apartments in it, was evacuated, and no other residents were injured in the fire.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, and Tieche said he doesn’t have an estimate on the damages.

“The apartment the fire started in is the only apartment damaged by actual fire,” he said. “There was some smoke damage in the hallways.”

Tieche said he doesn’t know where the victim is staying, but said her son was on the scene with her Wednesday morning. All other residents were allowed to return to their apartments after firefighters cleared the scene, he said.

Austintown Fire Department, Canfield Police Department and Mahoning County deputies also responded to the call.
