Don’t expect lots of high incentives during the final days of the Chevrolet Cobalt, a senior General Motors executive said.

Susan Docherty, vice president of sales, service and marketing for GM, said on a conference call with reporters today that the automaker won’t “flood the market with lots of Cobalts” ahead of the launch of the Chevrolet Cruze next year.

Docherty used the Cobalt as an example of a change in thinking at GM. The automaker has to move away from being the industry’s incentive leader, she said.

GM needs to build its market share with strong products, not great deals, she said.

“We don’t want to get into a situation where we’re jamming cars in the marketplace just to buy share. That’s a bad behavior,” she said.
