Teenager on track struck and killed by train

HILLIARD — Authorities say a teenager walking on a railroad track was wearing headphones when he was struck and killed by a train.

Arthur Lane apparently never heard the train horn. The 16-year-old sophomore at Hilliard Davidson High School near Columbus was killed Friday.

Hilliard Police Chief Doug Francis said the CSX train approached Lane from behind. The engineer applied the brakes but couldn’t stop in time.

Lane was pronounced dead at the scene. He was walking from the school to a library, where his mother was going to pick him up.

A family friend said Lane sometimes used the railroad tracks as a shortcut to get to the library.

Students and teachers had a candlelight vigil at the school Friday night.

Trucks pose challenge to highway planners

CINCINNATI — Experts say commercial truck traffic is expected to soar over the next 10 years, leading to further highway congestion unless the U.S. greatly improves its infrastructure.

Ohio is trying to take freight traffic off the roads by expanding the use of rail and barge shipping.

The state is using $3.6 million in federal stimulus funds to raise five bridges along a rail line between Cincinnati and Columbus that would allow clearance for double-stacked containers.

Woman trapped in car overnight after crash

STOYSTOWN — A western Pennsylvania woman is hospitalized after she was trapped overnight in her vehicle after a crash.

Police say Stacey Gryskiewicz ran off the road while trying to avoid a deer around 9 p.m. Friday. Her sport utility vehicle went down an embankment to a stream and overturned, trapping her inside.

Police say Gryskiewicz, of Stoystown, was able to keep the car running, turn the heat up and cover herself with a blanket. A hunter discovered the crash around 6 a.m. Saturday.

Officials at Conemaugh Hospital say Gryskiewicz was listed in fair condition Sunday evening. Police say she sustained cuts to her face and a possibly broken jaw.

Human remains found

BETHLEHEM — Police say human remains have been discovered by a pair of eastern Pennsylvania hunters.

Police in Bethlehem say the hunters made the discovery Saturday afternoon. The identity of the deceased is not being released pending notification of the family.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.

Philly students plan walkout in wake of attacks

PHILADELPHIA — Some high school students say they fear for their safety after a series of assaults last week and won’t be attending classes.

The president of the Chinese American Student Association at South Philadelphia High School said Sunday that students will meet elsewhere during school hours this week.

Wei Chen says the group will continue to talk with district officials.

Tensions between black and Asian students at the school erupted in assaults last week. Ten students were suspended and several sought medical treatment.

The students met with district officials Friday but Chen says their concerns were not fully addressed. She says one staff member slept through the meeting.

School officials say the clashes are an aberration that belie efforts to improve race relations.
