United Way plans event
YOUNGSTOWN — The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley will have its kick-off event for the Young Leaders Society on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ninkasis Bar & Grille, 1714 Boardman-Poland Road.
A $10 cover charge will benefit the United Way and the evening will include free appetizers, drink specials and a variety of holiday raffle baskets.
Guest bartenders for the evening include state Sen. Joseph Schiavoni and Robert Hannon, United Way president and chief professional officer.
All proceeds benefit the United Way.

Health fair at church
YOUNGSTOWN — The Wal-Mart Vision Centers of Boardman, Austintown, Liberty and Warren are sponsoring a health fair at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 388 Midlothian Blvd., on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
Participants include Second Harvest Food Bank, resource assistance; Northside Podiatry Residency, free foot screenings; Dr. Rudy Braydich, free dental screenings; DelliQuardi Chiropractic Clinic, exercise tips; Northside Medical Center, heart attack and stroke-prevention information; Lions Club, glaucoma screenings; Goodwill Industries, free ambylopia (lazy eye) screenings for children 4-10; and Clemente Ambulance, blood-pressure screenings.
There will also be door prizes, refreshments and face paintings.
St. E’s receives award
YOUNGSTOWN — St. Elizabeth Health Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines ÆStroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award, given to hospitals that ensure that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
To receive the award, St. Elizabeth achieved at least 12 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines Stroke Performance Achievement indicators and achieved at least 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 Get With The Guidelines Stroke Quality Measures during that same period of time, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.
Designation of excellence
GREENVILLE, Pa. — UPMC Horizon, along with Horizon Surgical Associates-UPMC, has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence Æ.
The designation, which UPMC Horizon has had since 2005, recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery.
Dec. orientation canceled
ALLIANCE — Alliance Community Hospital Volunteer Department’s December orientation, “Ventures in Volunteering” will not occur.
The next scheduled orientation is Jan. 5, 2010, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Well-child clinic scheduled
GIRARD — The well-child immunization clinic will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Girard Health Department, 100 W. Main St.
A $5 administrative fee will be charged per child.
Parents are reminded to bring a copy of the child’s immunization record, and that a parent or guardian must accompany children under age 18.
Parents must preregister child prior to the clinic.

Health excellence award
WARREN — Trumbull Memorial Hospital received the HealthGrades 2009/2010 Women’s Health Excellence Award, indicating it ranks among the top 5 percent in the nation for Women’s Health outcomes, according to HealthGrades,
The hospital is also 5-star rated for women’s health.
The Sixth Annual HealthGrades-Women’s Health in American Hospitals study, released earlier this year, analyzed patient outcomes for the in-hospital treatment of 16 procedures or diagnoses concerning women’s health.
Jameson gets recognition
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Jameson Health System has been recognized for demonstrating excellence in patient care by the Pittsburgh office of VHA, the national health-care alliance, with its Pennsylvania’s Achieving Patient Care Excellence (APEX) award.
The award is given for demonstrating high levels of clinical performance by eliminating Symptomatic Catheter-Associated Hospital-Acquired Urinary Tract Infections for several consecutive three-month periods hospitalwide.
