Youth orchestra to open new season

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Stephen L. Gage and assistant director Richard Smrek, will present its first concert of the season at 4 p.m. Sunday at Powers Auditorium. Advance tickets are available at the box office or by calling (330) 744-0264.
The Youth Orchestra will present von Weber’s overture from the Opera “Oberon”; “Academic Festival” overture by Brahms and Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.” Flutist Stephanie Carter, winner of the Youth Orchestra Senior Concerto Competition and a student at Lakeview High School, will perform Hamilton Hardy’s “In Ireland.”
The Symphonette, under the direction of Michele Prokop and Richard Smrek and accompanied by pianist Karen Lyn Fisher and percussionist Joe Amadio, will open the concert with melodies of the season and favorites, including Christmas classics arranged by Bauman.
