Spartans receive all-Ohio recognition

COLUMBUS — Boardman senior defensive lineman J.T. Moore, an Ohio State recruit, and Spartan senior kicker Trevor Ragan earned first team All-Ohio honors in Division I, and Howland senior linebacker Matt Chambers was a first-teamer in Division II on this year’s Associated Press All-Ohio teams, released Monday.
Moore, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end, had eight sacks and nine tackles for loss during the regular season for the Spartans (7-4), who made the playoffs for the second time in three years.
Ragan (5-11, 180) broke the school record with 22 straight field goals, including 15 of 15 this fall. He was 41 of 42 on extra points (the other was blocked) and had 25 touchbacks on kickoffs.
Chambers (5-9, 185), the district defensive player of the year, had 105 tackles, including 11 sacks and eight tackles for loss, to help the Tigers (9-2) advance to the postseason for the third straight year.
North Canton Hoover back Erick Howard, the 2008 Mr. Football, was the offensive player of the year in Division I, with Jordan Hicks of West Chester Lakota West sharing defensive honors with Massillon Washington’s Bo Grunder.
Division II players of the year are Dominique Brown of Cincinnati Winton Woods, Logan’s Patrick Angle, Devin Clodfelter of Columbus Independence, Mentor Lake Catholic’s Joe Ribiero and Chagrin Falls Kenston’s Pat Behm.
Coaches of the year include Middletown’s Jason Krause, Springfield’s Rick Robertson and Dublin Coffman’s Mark Crabtree along with Dick Cromwell of Toledo St. Francis and Brian Cross of Lewis Center Olentangy Orange.
