Soccer tops IPFW, 2-1

YOUNGSTOWN — Sophomore Kara Cooper scored twice, including the game-winning goal with one second remaining in overtime, to lead the YSU soccer team to a 2-1 victory over IPFW on Sunday at Stambaugh Stadium.

The Mastodons (0-2) took control early with a breakaway goal at the 6:39 mark.

Cooper scored with 15 minutes left in the first half for the Penguins (2-1-1).

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Kline posted six saves in her second win of the season.

Volleyball in split

COLLEGE PARK, Md. SEmD The YSU volleyball team defeated Stony Brook and took Maryland to five sets in splitting two matches at the Maryland Invitational.

Senior Ruth Boscaljon collected 28 kills in the two matches and freshman Suzanne Lasseigne had a double-double in her first career start against the Terrapins.

The Penguins won the first two sets against the Terrapins, 25-21 and 25-23, but Maryland came back to win the final three sets 25-15, 25-17 and 16-14.

The Penguins sweep Stony Brook 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17.

YSU hit .294 and accumulated 10 blocks as the Seawolves hit just .054.

Boscaljon had 13 kills, hit .522 and had six blocks, and fellow senior Allison Heinz had 10 kills. Dani Soubliere, Lasseigne, Laurie Shives and Brittany McNeal each had at least 10 digs.

Bulls upend Crew, 1-0

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Dane Richards made a 50-yard run with a loose ball off a corner to give the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 upset over Columbus and snap the Crew’s five-game Major League Soccer win streak Sunday.

The win was the second straight for the lowly Red Bulls (4-16-4) since Richie Williams was made interim head coach after the resignation of Juan Carlos Osorio.

First-place Columbus (10-4-9) lost for the first time since June 20 but still holds a one-point lead over Chicago in the Eastern Conference.

Richards scored his third goal of the season off a spectacular run following a Columbus corner attempt in the 63rd minute.

Rapids top Dynamo

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Julien Baudet scored his first goal of the year in the 55th minute of the 1-0 match.

Playing in his first game since breaking his left forearm last month, Baudet was standing in front of an open net when he received a corner kick from Mehdi Ballouchy and buried a header past goalkeeper Pat Onstad.

Goalkeeper Matt Pickens posted his sixth shutout of the season and 17th of his career for Colorado (9-7-6).

Houston (11-7-7) extended its winless skid to three. The Dynamo have a two-point lead over Los Angeles in the Western Conference.

Washington Mystics hand Lynx setback

WASHINGTON — Crystal Langhorne had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Washington Mystics to an 81-75 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA on Sunday.

Alana Beard added 13 points as the Mystics ended a three-game losing streak to the Lynx. Six Washington players scored in double figures.

Lindsey Harding’s jumper gave Washington a 76-70 lead with 1:09 remaining. Matee Ajavon made five free throws in the final 48 seconds to seal the victory.

Liberty prevail, 77-63

NEW YORK — Shameka Christon scored 18 points and Janel McCarville added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in her return from a sprained ankle.

It gave the Liberty a split of a home-and-home series and the four-game season series.

The Liberty (12-17), sitting last in the Eastern Conference, began the day 21‚Ñ2 games behind the Sky (14-16), who were tied for third with Connecticut.

Grant wins lightweight single sculls at worlds

POZNAN, Poland — Defending champion Duncan Grant of New Zealand won his third consecutive world title in the lightweight single sculls at the world rowing championships Sunday.

Grant crossed the line in 6 minutes, 50.78 seconds, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Vasileios Polymeros of Greece and Mads Rasmussen of Denmark.
