Ohio geodesic dome bound for historic places list

NOVELTY, Ohio (AP) — A massive geodesic dome that seemed futuristic when it was built in northeast Ohio 50 years ago is now regarded as something historic.

ASM International’s open dome made of aluminum tubing and reaching 103 feet high and 274 feet across is headed for a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure was nominated Friday by a state advisory panel that calls it an “engineering marvel.” Formal inclusion on the list is expected within a few months.

The dome, officially named “Space Lattice,” was designed by architect and futurist Buckminster Fuller and was built in 1959 on a site 18 miles east of Cleveland. It spans the world headquarters of ASM, a scientific organization formerly known as the American Society for Metals.
