Special to The Vindicator/Nick Mays willing walkers: Prepared to take part in the Great Strides Walk in an effort to raise funds for research to eliminate cystic fibrosis are, from left, Chrissy Falleti and Colleen Novosel, committee members, who are joined by 3-year-old James Adams.

NILES — Cystic Fibrosis Northern Ohio Chapter has scheduled its 10th annual Great Strides Walk for Sept. 12 at Eastwood Field. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and Mark Monstrola, WFMJ meteorologist, will start the walk at 10.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support vital CF research in order to combat the life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of children and young adults.

There is no fee to walk, and donations will be appreciated. After the walk participants are invited to lunch at the stadium, where there will be a raffle and entertainment.

Also scheduled as a benefit for CF is a game night with the Scrappers Baseball team Saturday at Eastwood Field. For $13 baseball fans will get a box seat and a ticket to a wine tasting event before and during the game. The CF Foundation will receive $5 for every game/wine taste package purchased in advance by contacting Billy Richards at (330) 505-0000, by e-mail from brichards@mvscrappers.com or the day of the game.

Another fundraiser will be the fifth annual Tee Off to Cure CF golf outing on Sept. 13 at Candywood Golf Course in Vienna. For information on the event contact Melissa Rowland at (330) 545-4215.

Coming next month

In October there will also be a fundraising wine tasting event at Mastropietro Winery, which will kick off the Youngstown State University Student Organization for Respiratory Care for the 2010 walk.
