South Range refocuses to topple Tuslaw, 24-14

MASSILLON — The South Range High football team scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat Tuslaw 24-14 Saturday in a game that was delayed from Friday night.

The Raiders returned home around midnight Friday and were back on the bus by noon Saturday for the 90-minute return trip. The game resumed at 4 p.m., with the score tied 7-7 in the third quarter.

“If we lost, we were always going to have that travel time as an excuse but we we weren’t going to use that excuse,” said Raiders coach Dan Yeagley, whose team lost to the Mustangs 29-28 in last year’s opener. “The kids refocused and did what they had to do.

“I’m very proud of them for that, especially against a good team like Tuslaw.”

James Mell scored two touchdowns, one on a 93-yard kickoff return, while Phil Arsuffi added another score on a 13-yard run, while Ethan Witmer booted a 31-yard field goal.

Mason Miller, who rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries, scored for Tuslaw on a 65-yard run.

Both Kiger and Mogadore’s Drew Babbitt threw two interceptions in the contest.

“We just made too many mistakes and you can’t do that against a team that good,” said first-year Rams coach Joe Stevens. “Their quarters were the first and fourth and ours were the second and third.

“We’ve gotta have that fourth quarter.”

Afterward, Mogadore coach Matt Adorni had high praise for Stevens’ team.

“He said, ‘We had a lot of guys back and we thought we’d have a pretty good team and you went toe-to-toe with us,” said Stevens. “And we did. We were pretty physical.”
