“Library League.” An “adventures in reading” program to bring books to life. For grades kindergarten to 4. Howland Branch, 3:15 p.m. Sept. 11 and 25.

“Floor Puzzle Fridays.” Put together one of the library’s many floor puzzles. After the puzzle is completed, a picture will be taken and a copy will be printed out for the child to take home. Liberty Branch, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 and 25.

“Family Movie Time.” A movie will be shown on the library’s big screen for children of all ages and their families. Howland Branch, 1 p.m. Sept. 12.

TEENXTREME PROGRAMS

“Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest.” Danielle Scott was a TeenXTreme Teen Advisory Board member whom we lost to cancer. To honor her and her love of writing, we are sponsoring the first Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest. This year’s category is poetry. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or typed on standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper (not to exceed two pages) to any county public library Sept. 1-30. If submitting an online entry, please select the writing type (poem) and include your phone number. Entries are not returnable and must include your name, phone number, grade and school. “BIC: Morningstar Database Webinar.” Morningstar Investment Research Center is a comprehensive online investing database that provides independent opinion and data on more than 30,000 stocks and mutual funds. “Community Diversity Conversation Salon: ‘Diversity — A Catalyst for Change’ With Andres Gonzalez.” Andres Gonzalez, director of diversity and community outreach at the Cleveland Clinic and keynote speaker at YSU’s 2009 Hispanic Heritage Celebration, will facilitate a discussion about how diversity can be a catalyst for change in the Greater Mahoning Valley. Community Diversity Conversation Salons, facilitated by leaders and scholars in their respective fields, are a series of brown-bag discussions regarding national, state and local issues affecting diversity. “Community Diversity Program Series.” The cast of Flow Theater for a New Era’s “One Race, One People, One Peace” will discuss using theater as an entry point to self-discovery, dialogue and understanding. The Columbus-based group will perform the play at 7:30 p.m. the same evening at YSU’s Ford Theater in Bliss Hall; play admission is free, but tickets (limit four) will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 10 at the information desk in YSU’s Kilcawley Center. “Conversation Salon.” Special gatherings of adults ages 55 and older who discuss current events, the arts, social and cultural issues, politics, ethics, entertainment, science, technology or whatever else may be on their minds. “Family Health and Safety Fair.” Stop by for a wide variety of health and safety information for all ages. The “Original” Visiting Nurse Association of Mahoning County will provide free blood-pressure screenings. Youngstown Hearing and Speech will give free hearing exams to ages 18 and older. Representatives will be available from the Mammovan, Mahoning County Sheriff’s Senior Services Program, Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc., Ohio State University Extension office and Youngstown Fire Department. “Hispanic Heritage Student Art Celebration and Exhibition.” Help kick off this inaugural art exhibition featuring 50 middle and high school student entries and showcasing the top three contest winners. “Lunch & Learn: ‘China: A World View’ with Dr. George McCloud.” Dr. George McCloud, YSU’s vice president for university advancement, will describe some of the key forces that have shaped these lenses, as he has spent more than 20 years studying and traveling to gain a better understanding of historic and contemporary China. “‘Sojourn to the Past’ Director Visits Library.” Meet former history teacher Jeff Steinberg, who leads a 10-day program enabling high-school students to visit Southern landmarks of the civil-rights movement. “Sojourn to the Past” lets students see firsthand the destructive effects of racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination. Newton Falls Public Library
