Choir members sought for Canfield Fair service

CANFIELD — An ecumenical service is planned at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Youngstown Symphony Stage on the concourse near the grandstand at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Tom and Kelly Scurich of Canfield announced that those interested in participating in the choir should meet at 9 a.m. to rehearse.

They have been involved in the service for 20 years.

Russ Libb of Berlin Center United Methodist Church will conduct the service.

Summer musical

YOUNGSTOWN — The adult choir of Greater Friendship Baptist Church, 646 Lakewood Ave., will have its summer musical at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Choirs and praise teams were invited to participate.

Outdoor concert

GIRARD — An outdoor concert featuring The Bridge will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 890 Church-Hill Road.

The group plays a variety of music types including classic rock, reggae, country, easy- listening, gospel and contemp-orary praise music.

Hot dogs and beverages will be available.

A free-will offering will be received.

Those attending should take lawn chairs.

In case of bad weather, the concert will be inside.

Pastoral anniversary

MINERAL RIDGE — First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the ordination and installation of its pastor, the Rev. Mark F. Phillips.

The Rev. Mr. Phillips graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in May of 1994 and was ordained on July 31, 1994. He began his ministry at the Mineral Ridge church on Aug. 1, 1994, and was installed on Sept. 11, 1994, by Eastminster Presbytery.

Mr. Phillips’ ministry is the longest of any pastor in the church’s 151-year history.

The celebration will begin with the Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 13. The pastor will preach on “If I Had But One Sermon to Preach.”

At 4 p.m. a special anniversary service will be at the church featuring special music and guest clergy and friends of the congregation and pastor.

After the service, there will be a dinner at The Fifth Season Banquet Center, 4400 Main St., followed by “Roast the Reverend.”

Gospel Fest

LISBON — Seven Springs Gospel Fest will take place Sept. 5-7 at Seven Springs at Guilford Lake in Lisbon.

Performing will be The Hemphills, Kevin Spencer & Friends, Stephen Hill, Barbara Fairchild & Roy Morris (Monday only), The Weavers, Rev. Larry Orrell and Rev. Tim Ginter.

Admission is $5 each day and a love offering will be taken.

There will be Sunday morning service at 10:30 a.m. with Joel Hemphill speaking.

Play on Dorothy Day

Villa Maria, Pa. — Still Point Theatre Collective will present “Haunted By God: The Life of Dorothy Day,” an acclaimed play about the co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement, at 7 p.m. Friday.

The presentation features Still Point founder and director, Lisa Wagner Carollo.

This presentation is open to the general public for a suggested free-will offering.

SHARON, Pa. — The Rev. Brent Brown of Princeton, W.Va., will deliver an inspirational message during an early harvest revival planned at 7 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St.

Rosary cenacle

YOUNGSTOWN — The Shrine of Our Lady, Comforter of the Afflicted, 517 S. Belle Vista Ave., and Queen of the Holy Rosary Prayer Group will have a rosary cenacle at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the shrine.

Refreshments will follow.

Study group

CANFIELD — Now Creations will start a new book at its Thursday night study group that meets at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road.

“The New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle will be the topic of discussion on the starting date, from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Sept. 10.

Registration is appreciated but not required. A donation of $10 a session is requested, but not required.

Outreach service

YOUNGSTOWN — An outreach service is planned at 4 p.m. Sunday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., with guest speaker the Rev. Kenneth W. Paramore of Christian Revival and Discipleship Center.

The choir and congregation of CRDC also will participate.

The Rev. Kenneth Simon is pastor and the Rev. Lonnie Simon, pastor emeritus.

New organist at church

YOUNGSTOWN — Anthony Ruggiero is the new organist at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive.

He is a native of Northeast Ohio and graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School.

He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in performance and voice from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, where he studied piano with Dr. Robert E. Hopkins, voice with Dr. C. Wade Raridon and opera with Dr. Donald Vogel.

Ruggiero has served as director of pastoral music at many area churches including St. Charles Church in Boardman, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Poland, Mahoning United Methodist Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Rutherford, N.J.

He has directed choral and cantor programs for the Diocese of Youngstown Catholic and has sung in churches and synagogues in Cleveland and Pittsburgh, including the Heinz Chapel Compline Choirs of University of Pittsburgh.

He was a cantor and pianist for the National Convention of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians in Pittsburgh.

Ruggiero has been a voice teacher at YSU for more than 10 years.

Recently, he and a colleague, Kathryn Umble, flutist, won the Pittsburgh Concert Society’s 2009 Concert Series competition, and will perform in recital in Pittsburgh in November.

Anniversary celebration

YOUNGSGTOWN —The Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is sponsoring a wedding anniversary celebration honoring diocesan couples who are observing their 25th, 40th, 50th or over anniversaries in 2009.

Mass will be celebrated by Bishop George V. Murry at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. John the Baptist Church in Canton. Couples will renew their marriage vows and receive a personalized certificate signed by Bishop Murry.

After Mass, a reception hosted by St. John will be in the school hall for the couples and their families.

Couples planning to attend this celebration should register at their parish by Sept. 14.

Revival scheduled

YOUNGSTOWN — First Spanish Baptist Church, 2777 Oak St. Ext., will have a revival this weekend with a block party planned from 3 to 6 p.m. today at which school supplies will be distributed and there will be games, pinata and food.

A service will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday with Pastor Julio Pineda of Cincinnati.

Musical presentation

YOUNGSTOWN — Good Shepherd Church of God in Christ, 79 N. Hartford Ave., will present Mighty Golden Wonder in a musical program at 6 p.m. today.

Carmen Bowman is pastor.

YOUNGSTOWN — Minister Shawn Little of Tabernacle Baptist Church will be guest speaker at 4 p.m. Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave.
