Mayoral hopeful off ballot over age rule

STREETSBORO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio mayoral candidate removed from the ballot because he’s too young may go to court to challenge the local age requirement.

Democrat Brett McClafferty was 19 two years ago when he lost a runoff for mayor by a handful of votes in Streetsboro, northeast of Akron. That showing prompted city leaders to change the city charter to impose a minimum mayoral age of 23.

McClafferty wants to run again but doesn’t meet the new rule.

His attorney says a lawsuit is possible if the election board doesn’t reverse itself and put McClafferty’s name back on the November ballot.
