Witnesses: Wilkes-Barre, Pa., police beat suspect

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — State police say they are investigating allegations that police in northeastern Pennsylvania severely beat a man, breaking his ribs and fracturing his cheek.

Witnesses say Wilkes-Barre police used excessive force Tuesday on 23-year-old Luis Cruz.

Cruz’s family says he suffered broken ribs, a fractured cheek, a laceration to the left eye, bleeding in his ear and multiple bruises and abrasions.

City police Chief Gerard Dessoye says an internal investigation found that officers “acted accordingly” to subdue Cruz, who allegedly fled from officers. He says Cruz will face unspecified charges.
