Ohio juvenile detention center to close

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say they plan to close the juvenile-detention center in southern Ohio’s Scioto County because there’s not enough money to continue operating it.

Judge James Kirsch said Wednesday that the Scioto County Juvenile Detention Center in Portsmouth will shut down Sept. 11.

Talks are taking place with other counties to make detention arrangements for inmates now at the center in Portsmouth, 85 miles south of Columbus.

Last week, the state placed Scioto County in fiscal emergency because of a $3.5 million deficit.
