Ohio district stops school’s gender split
COLUMBUS (AP) — An Ohio school district has moved quickly to stop an elementary school from separating the boys from the girls during lunch and recess.
Parents complained after students at Sedalia Elementary in Columbus found the new arrangement when they returned on Monday. The school is part of the Groveport Madison district, where officials said the policy would “cease and desist” as of today.
School officials explained that they introduced the new system as a pre-emptive strike against bullying and disruptive behavior.
But a California-based group that works with schools on bullying and violence prevention says there are better methods. Community Matters founder Rick Phillips says it’s important for boys and girls to learn to function together in social settings.
