Scrappers' big 3rd inning beats Batavia

The Scrappers scored eight runs on their way to a 11-6 win over the Muckdogs.

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored eight runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the Batavia Muckdogs, 11-6, in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field.

The Scrappers (42-23) were led by Jordan Henry, who went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Rafael Vera added three hits —including two doubles — and two RBIs.

The Scrappers had six extra-base hits, all doubles, while four of Batavia’s hits went for extra bases.

Kyle Conley had three of them — two doubles and his fifth home run.

Batavia (33-32) scored three runs in the first inning on Conley’s home run, after Michael Swinson and Devin Goodwin led off the game with back-to-back singles.

The Muckdogs scored again in the second inning when Ivan Castro, who walked with one out, scored on Goodwin’s ground out.

The Scrappers took control with a long rally in the third inning. They did it with only four hits, scoring runs on a walk, a wild pitch and a hit batter.

The big hit was a three-run double by Juan Aponte. Tim Palincsar and Henry followed with RBI doubles.

Mahoning Valley scored twice more in the fourth inning. Jason Kipnis led off with a single but was cut down trying to steal second.

Folgia and Brito then drew walks, and after Chun Chen’s groundout, Vera drove in both runners with a double to center field.

Batavia closed to 10-6 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a single by Edwin Gomez that drove in Conley and Matthew Adams.

The Scrappers added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Vera led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Henry’s single.

Austin Adams (1-1) picked up the win with three innings of relief.

Tyler Lavigne (2-2) allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning as part of the Scrappers’ eight-run rally.

The teams conclude their three-game series tonight at Eastwood Field.
