YOUNGSTOWN — The YSU Football Alumni Club is trying to get in contact with Penguin football players from the 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949 post-World War II era teams.

The YSU Athletic Department is planning on recognizing these individuals for their efforts in establishing the foundation and tradition of Penguin football during the October 10 home game against Western Illinois.

YYFFA players to be with Browns

YOUNGSTOWN — Twenty-five members of the Youngstown Youth Flag Football Association will participate in pregame ceremonies for Saturday’s Browns-Titans exhibition game at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

The YYFFA members will take part in forming a gauntlet on the field for the Browns to run through to the sidelines.

The Browns are saluting youth football at Saturday’s game.

Lyell in action

NILES — Area boxer Billy Lyell (20-7) will fight next on Oct. 17 at the Niles Eastwood Expo Center in a 10-round main event.

Lyell is currently ranked #12 by the IBF and #19 in the WBC as the middleweight contender after his decision over John Duddy.

Also on the card will be area welterweight Jake Giuriceo (3-0, 2 KOs).

The tickets will go on sale Sept. 21 at the Eastwood mall information desk and also Big Family Sports Grill, formerly know as Inner Circle Pizza, connected to the Expo Center.

Cross Country meet

ASHTABULA — Poland High School’s Sean Murphy was first in the Ashtabula St. John’s Cross Country Invitational with a time of 12 minutes, 49 seconds.

Edgewood won the team race followed by second-place Poland and Madison, in third.

Carnation Triathlon

BELOIT — Amanda Frost, 31, of Columbiana won the women’s division of the Carnation Festival triathlon with a time of 2:22.14.

The race began at West Branch State Park with a 1,000-meter swim.

Next followed a 27-mile bike race that ended at the Alliance High School.

The run went through Mount Union College and other residential areas for 6.2 miles.

Grove City expansion

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College is making several changes and additions to its Department of Physical Education and Athletics.

The College has hired Jonathan Miller as head women’s water polo coach and assistant men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach.

Miller, a native of Fresno, Calif., comes to Grove City after spending the 2008-09 academic year as assistant men’s and women’s water polo coach at California Baptist University.

Head men’s swimming and diving coach Dave Fritz will add the responsibilities of head women’s swimming and diving coach at Grove City this year.

Buckeye tickets

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center Volunteers Association is holding a raffle for two tickets to the Ohio State-Illinois football game.

These tickets were donated by State Representative Linda Bolon to help raise money for maintaining and improving the Wildlife Education Center.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Wildlife Center located in Beaver Creek State Park on Saturdays from noon until 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-4.

Raffle tickets can also be purchased at the Wildlife Education Center website at www.beavercreekwildlife.org.
