Ohio woman, Ky. man trade kidney donors
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A woman in Ohio is swapping kidney donors with a man in Kentucky after both found they weren’t good matches for the people who wanted to give them kidneys.
Doctors say Karen Stokes of Dayton is compatible with Russell Hiler of Lexington, Ky., who offered to give a kidney to his father, Paul Hiler.
Meanwhile, it turns out that John Tatman, the friend willing to donate a kidney to Stokes, is a match for the elder Hiler.
The pairings were made through a database at University Hospital in Cincinnati, where the two transplants are scheduled for Friday.
Stokes and Paul Hiler both need their new organs because of kidney failure due to complications from Type 1 diabetes.
Donor compatibility is based on factors including blood and tissue types.
