Senior education forum
YOUNGSTOWN — Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1219 Himrod Ave., will present a senior education forum on driver’s safety from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the church’s E.B. Life Center. Guest speaker will be Willie Wright of Columbus, program manager of the African-American Church Call to Buckle Up.
Liberty trustees to meet
LIBERTY — The township trustees are to meet in special session at 8 a.m. today at the township administration building to discuss grass abatements.
Candidates dropped
LISBON — Columbiana County Board of Elections on Tuesday removed two candidates for Washingtonville Village Council in the November election.
James Smith, 565 W. Main St., was removed for not having enough valid signatures to get on the ballot.
William Jones, 700 Boston St., was removed for not properly filling out his candidate’s form.
The men can’t get on the ballot by trying to run as write-in candidates, board officials said.
Youths to cut grass
BROOKFIELD — Trumbull County Family Court, under the direction of Judges Richard James and Pamela Rintala, has purchased a mower/brush hog to provide a service throughout the county to cut high grass on properties designated as a nuisance under state law.
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, juveniles from Trumbull County Family Court will be cutting grass all day in the township on designated nuisance properties, starting with 8211 Lorain St., according to a family-court press release.

ALLIANCE — The John T. Huston - Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College will have an educational berry session from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
During the session, participants will learn which berries are edible and which are not. They will look at recipes for sorbets, jams, jellies, pies and cobblers and also have the opportunity to sample some of these treats.
Registration is required. The nature center is located six miles south of Mount Union College on Daniel Street, just off state Route 183. For more information, contact the center at (330) 823-7487.
Obama visit
CINCINNATI — President Barack Obama is coming to Ohio on Labor Day and will use the visit to try to drum up support for his health-care overhaul. The White House said Monday that the president will attend the Cincinnati AFL-CIO’s annual Labor Day picnic Sept. 7 at the Coney Island amusement park southeast of downtown.
Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman Tim Burke says union members were part of the base that helped elect Obama and need to be rallied to get on board with his health plan. Local GOP Chairman Alex Triantafilou says Obama is trying to sell a program Americans don’t want and is helping the Republican cause, even in the GOP stronghold of southwest Ohio.
Verizon refunds
CLEVELAND — The nation’s largest wireless carrier says it will pay refunds to customers erroneously charged $1.99 per month for Internet data services they didn’t use.
Officials with Verizon Communications Inc. don’t know how widespread the problem is but say they believe it’s nationwide. After a columnist wrote about a six-month ordeal fighting the charges, more than 400 readers of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland responded with similar complaints about being billed for “data usage.” Four Verizon executives were at the newpaper’s offices for more than 90 minutes Monday.
