CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed rookie forward Danny Green, their second-round pick in this year’s NBA draft.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-6 Green finished his college career at North Carolina as one of the most versatile players in ACC history. He is the only player in conference history to record at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 250 assists, 150 3-pointers, 150 blocks and 150 steals.
Green averaged a career-best 13.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 38 games while helping the Tar Heels win the NCAA title this year. He averaged 8.2 points in five games for the Cavaliers in the Las Vegas Summer League.
Hawks sign Joe Smith
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Hawks signed free agent forward Joe Smith to address the team’s lack of inside depth.
Smith, a 14-year veteran, was the NBA’s No. 1 overall draft pick in 1995. The Hawks are his 10th NBA home.
The 6-foot-10, 225-pound Smith will join center Zaza Pachulia as the top inside backups behind starters Al Horford and Josh Smith for the Hawks, who advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season.
Smith, 34, played 21 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season after starting the season with Oklahoma City. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds in 13 postseason games with the Cavaliers. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.7 rebounds in the regular season.
Spurs’ Big Three will be healthy
SAN ANTONIO — Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili left being busy this summer to the rest of the San Antonio Spurs.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said that his two aging stars have taken it easier than usual this offseason to get healthy, while the Spurs front office was unusually active and swinging deals for major additions like Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess.
Duncan, hobbled by knee problems down the stretch and in the playoffs, has pushed back the normal start of his normal preseason regimen by a month. The 33-year-old will begin workouts next week that the All-Star typically gets going in early August.
Ginobili, meanwhile, has limited his summer activity to a treadmill and some walks after appearing in just 44 games last season because of bad ankles.
Donaghy jailed
TAMPA, Fla. — Disgraced former NBA referee Tim Donaghy was back behind bars Tuesday, accused of violating his federal probation by not showing up for work, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Donaghy, 42, was being held without bond a day after his arrest at a halfway house in Tampa where he was finishing his 15-month sentence for gambling charges.
