Academic Distress Commission coming to Youngstown schools

YOUNGSTOWN — The state will send an Academic Distress Commission into the Youngstown City School District to help the district map out a plan of academic recovery.

Deborah Delisle, Ohio superintendent of public instruction, said Youngstown is the only one of 610 public school districts to be placed in academic emergency on its state local report card released today. The district was in academic watch last year.

Delisle said Youngstown failed to achieve adequate yearly progress or meet its value-added component on its achievement testing nor did it meet the value-added component.

She said the commission will work with school officials to examine areas of practice and review data and will work in a collaborative fashion to determine the best course of action to improve academics.
