Ohio elections chief: No maximum wait time at polls

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio’s top elections official concludes that it’s not practical for the state to set a maximum wait time at the polls during elections.

In a report today, Brunner indicates a limit would be difficult to enforce. She says it’s more important to continue policies that helped make for what was largely a smooth 2008 election, such as the expanded use of absentee voting and statewide standards for dividing voting machines among counties.

The findings were issued as part of a settlement with the League of Women Voters over problems at the polls.

Only one of 82 county elections boards that responded to a survey said a statewide maximum wait time should be established. The majority had doubts, pointing out that not all counties and not all elections are alike.
