Summer concert series

BOARDMAN — Boardman Township Park’s Music in the Park Summer Concert Series will feature The Rocco Monaco Band. The concert, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, will be at the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre. Admission is free, but attendees are urged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets.

Nature walk at McKeever

SANDY LAKE, Pa. — Enjoy a relaxing afternoon stroll through the woods from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at McKeever Environmental Learning Center, 55 McKeever Lane. The guided, leisurely paced walk will include a few natural history stops along the way to Maurice Goddard State Park’s dam. Participants are responsible for their own drinking water and weather-appropriate clothing and can bring a snack if desired. The trail may contain uneven terrain. Walkers should meet at the center’s information shelter. Strolls will be offered the second Sunday of every month through October.

Fitch High orientation

AUSTINTOWN — Orientation for all incoming freshmen at Fitch High School will be Monday in the school auditorium. At least one parent is required to attend, and all students must wear approved attire for the 2009-10 school year. Students whose last names begin with A through L are to report at 8:50 a.m.; those whose surnames begin with M through Z are to report at 10:50.

Free dance lessons

YOUNGSTOWN — In honor of National Ballroom Week, USA Dance will sponsor a free night of lessons and dancing Sept. 20 at the Orthodox Center, 1025 Belle Vista Ave. It starts at 5 p.m. with one-on-one tutoring, followed by a professional swing lesson sponsored by Stephen Sobat of Studio One at 5:30 and dancing from 6:15 to 9. Dances are open to the public, with or without partners. USA Dance is a volunteer nonprofit corporation dedicated to promoting and sharing the excitement and joy of social and competitive dance in communities all across America. Computer-training class

Teacher’s firing approved

YOUNGSTOWN — Judge James C. Evans of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court recently approved Magistrate Eugene J. Fehr’s decision supporting Campbell Board of Education’s firing of teacher Raymond J. Lanzo of Boardman. Lanzo, who taught fifth grade in Campbell, had filed a lawsuit challenging his termination. The board unanimously fired him July 9, 2008, saying his discipline of male pupils by twisting their hair and pulling their ears constituted inappropriate touching.
