Brown e-book out Sept. 15

NEW YORK — The electronic edition of Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol” is coming out on the same day as the hardcover.

Doubleday announced in April that Brown’s first novel since “The Da Vinci Code” was coming out Sept. 15, but had hesitated to say when the e-book would be released, leading to speculation that the publisher was concerned that digital sales, a quickly rising market, would cut into purchases of the more expensive hardcover.

But in a recent statement, Doubleday spokeswoman Suzanne Herz said the e-book also would be available on Sept. 15 and cited concerns not about sales, but about “security and logistical issues,” since resolved.

Phelps, his bulldog & kids

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Michael Phelps, children’s book author? Yes, the 14-time Olympic gold medalist has a book out.

Published by Simon & Schuster, “How to Train with a T. Rex and Win 8 Gold Medals,” has illustrations by Ward Jenkins of Phelps, his bulldog Herman and his coach Bob Bowman.

In it, Phelps describes his training regimen in terms relatable to kids. For example, during six years of training, he swam 12,480 miles. That’s the same as swimming “from my hometown of Baltimore to the North Pole and back, and doing it all over again,” he says.

He also recalls the 100-meter butterfly race from the Beijing Olympics, when he won by one-hundredth of a second to preserve his successful bid for a record eight gold medals.
