Chen’s home run ignites Scrappers past Doubledays

AUBURN, N.Y. — Chun Chen hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored 10 runs over the final two innings to rally past Auburn 11-9 in a New York-Penn League game on Saturday.

Jordan Henry went 3-for-5 and scored three runs for the Scrappers (38-22), who hold a six-game lead on Williamsport in the Pinckney Division standings.

Chen had two hits and scored three runs, while Jason Kipnis went 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Mahoning Valley fell behind 6-1 after seven innings.

Marty Popham started and went five innings, striking out seven while giving up three runs on seven hits. Tyler Sturdevant (2-1) gave up three runs in 12‚Ñ3 innings, but got the win. Guido Fonseca struck out the one batter he faced in the ninth to get his fourth save.
