Honor Flight to D.C.

MINERAL RIDGE — William R. Lawrence of Salt Springs Road recently participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., for World War II veterans. He urged other veterans to participate. For information, call Jan Merrick at (440) 666-7901.

Pariza re-elected

John Pariza has been re-elected commander of the Korean War Veterans Association’s Mahoning Valley Chapter 137. Other 2009-10 officers include: Robert Vitullo, 1st vice commander; Peter Pizzulo, 2nd vice commander and membership chairman; Frank Sloat, adjutant; Harold Beringer, treasurer; Rickard Koker, chaplain; Steve Firment, quartermaster; Edward Dzeda, sergeant-at-arms. Trustees are Zeno Foley, Lloyd Edwards, Robert Bakalik, Domenic Lentini, Firment and Fred Ciarniello.

PROMOTIONS

Shutak is new colonel

Army Col. Catherine M. Shutak, recently promoted to her current rank in the Army Nurse Corps, is the new deputy commander for nursing at the 121st Combat Support Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Shutak is the daughter of former Austintown residents, Michael and Shirley Olinik. Shutak and her husband, David, have three children.

Phillips chosen as senior enlisted airman

COLUMBUS — Chief Master Sgt. Tamara Phillips has been chosen as the new senior enlisted airman for the Ohio Air National Guard. She replaces Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Muncy, who was recently selected for the top enlisted job at the national level. Phillips is both the first female and first black state command chief in the Ohio Air National Guard. As the state command chief, Phillips serves as a mentor and guide for the 5,000 members of Ohio Air National Guard.

Sullivan made 1st Sgt.

Army 1st Sgt. Michael F. Sullivan, a 1989 graduate of Chaney High School, was promoted to his present rank while serving his second 15-month deployment to Iraq, from which he recently returned to his base in Baumholder, Germany. He is the son of Michael T. and Mary Lou Sullivan of Youngstown. His wife, Stacey, two sons and a daughter are with him in Germany.

Airman Eric J. Netroe, a 2008 graduate of Struthers High School, is undergoing advanced basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He is the son of Anna and Peter Roscoe of Struthers.
