Soccer team loses

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Marist scored two goals late in the second half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Youngstown State soccer team (0-1) Friday in the 2009 season opener for both schools.

The Penguins had three shots, including two shots on goal, against the Red Foxes. Senior Jordan Gapczynski posted two shots, both on goal, while sophomore Kara Cooper, also took a shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Kline had five saves. The Penguins take on Howard, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Punt, pass, kick at Olde Dutch Mill

NORTH JACKSON — The Lake Milton Browns Backers will hold an NFL punt, pass & kick competition, Aug. 30 at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course.

The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8-15.

Mooney-Boardman tickets

YOUNGSTOWN — Tickets for the Cardinal Mooney-Boardman High School football game next Friday at Boardman at 7:30 p.m. will be on sale daily at the Mooney school office from Tuesday noon through Friday at 3:15 p,m. Tickets are priced at $7 (reserved), $6 (general) and $3 (students).

Hardhats play for title tonight

YOUNGSTOWN — The undefeated Steel Valley Hardhats (12-0) will play Northeast Ohio Disciples (9-3) for the Heartland Football League National Division championship tonight at South Field. Kickoff is at 7. Ticket price is $6.

Newton Falls tickets on sale

NEWTON FALLS — Tickets are on sale at the Superintendent’s Office for the upcoming Newton Falls football season. Cost for reserve season passes for six home games is $40. There is also a 10-game pass for adults for $50 and students for $30, good for any varsity game in volleyball, soccer, football or basketball.

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.

Varsity sports preview makes debut on 27th

AKRON — Time Warner Cable will debut its “Varsity Sports Preview” show on the Northeast Ohio Network (NEON).

“Varsity Sports Preview,” a 30-minute show comprised of news, analysis and interviews covering the upcoming weekend’s matchups, will air Thursdays at 7 p.m. on NEON. The show, which debuts August 27, will be hosted by Dave Wilson, Patrick Pierson and Eddie Dwyer. Wilson and Pierson are also commentators for high school football games on NEON. Dayton Gems camp The Dayton Gems, proud members of the AA-plus International Hockey League, will be holding their first open free agent camp on September 23 and 24th at Dayton’s Hara Arena. This camp will afford young players an opportunity to compete for a spot on the Gems inaugural roster. This camp is filling up quickly and players who are interested in competing for a spot should call the Gems office as soon as possible in order to reserve their spot or receive more information.

Participants are encouraged to call the Gems office at 937-275-7777 to register as soon as possible as space in the camp is limited.

Pirates activate pitcher Dumatrait

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates activated left-handed pitcher Phil Dumatrait from the 60-day disabled list Friday and placed right-handed reliever Jeff Karstens on the bereavement list because of his grandmother’s illness.

Dumatrait, 28, had reconstructive shoulder surgery more than a year ago and has been pitching over the past month on a rehabilitation assignment for four minor league teams in the Pittsburgh system.

Karstens left the team to be with family in San Diego.
