As a veteran photojournalist in Nashville, Tenn., Clancy was hired by USA Today to photograph a spina bifida corrective surgical procedure. The surgery was being performed on a 21-week-old fetus in utero at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. As the doctor performed the surgery, suddenly the fetus’ arm thrust out of the opening of the uterus and then pulled back, revealing its small hand.
Clancy snapped the photos that would be seen around the world and bring question to partial-birth abortion.
