Teacher Appreciation Day
BOARDMAN — Staples, 1260 Doral Drive, will help teachers get school supplies with a Teacher Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The first 100 teachers to visit the store will receive an EcoEasy bag of supplies, such as notepads and writing tools. The store also will be offering “Dollar Deals” that will allow teachers to buy such things as highlighters, pens and erasers at significant discounts. A research study shows that teachers spend nearly $400 of their own money on supplies for their students. The number is even higher — $770 — for first-year teachers.
Charges in death unlikely
WELLSVILLE — Officials said Thursday they do not expect any charges will be filed in the death of a 5-month-old boy who authorities say apparently was accidentally suffocated by a pillow. Cason Nicholas Yergin was pronounced dead Tuesday morning in the emergency room at East Liverpool City Hospital. Chief Deputy Allen Haueter of the Columbiana County Sheriff’s office said a 16-year-old relative baby-sitting the child fell asleep in a bed with the child and awoke to find the pillow on the infant’s face. An autopsy was performed by the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s office. Haueter said there were no signs of any trauma to the infant. County Prosecutor Robert Herron said officials were awaiting toxicology reports from the coroner’s office before making a formal ruling.

ROGERS — A Cleveland-area man was killed in a three-car crash on state Route 7 here around 11 a.m. Thursday. Dead is Yun Shan Wang, 64, of Lyndhurst, who was driving southbound on Route 7 with his 53-year-old wife, Yuen Jiuan Wang. The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post said a second car driven northbound on Route 7 by Tommy Beagle, 40, of East Liverpool, swerved left of center and crashed into Wang’s car. A third car entered a ditch to avoid the wreck, the OSHP said. Wang and his wife were flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where Wang died. Beagle was taken to St. E’s by ambulance.
