Struthers CHIP program to get $500K in funding

STAFF REPORT

STRUTHERS — The city has been notified it will receive $500,000 to help low- to moderate-income residents or their landlords with home improvement projects.

This fiscal year’s Community Housing Improvement Program funds, which is federal money distributed by the Ohio Department of Development, has five categories under which the funds may be spent, said city Auditor Tina Morell.

Residents can make smaller repairs to their homes; take on more extensive renovation projects; get assistance with a down-payment for a home; get emergency assistance to help prevent a foreclosure; or get help with rental properties — a landlord would pay half the cost of a project and the program would pay the other half, Morell said.

There are income guidelines to qualify for the program. Morel said a public hearing will be set for sometime next month so people who are interested in participating can learn more.
