Scrappers win 4-3 in return to NYPL play

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers returned to league play following the all-star break with a 4-3 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades in a New York-Penn League game on Wednesday.

Casey Frawley had three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Scrappers (37-21).

The Scrappers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Kyle Bellows that scored Frawley, who reached on a one-out single.

The Renegades (27-31) rallied for three runs — just one was earned — on one hit in the second inning.

The Scrappers answered with a three-run rally in the third.

Frawley led off with a single, and with two outs Jesus Brito walked. Ben Carlson followed with a two-run double, and he scored when Chun Chen’s grounder was misplayed into an error by Hudson Valley third baseman Bennett Davis.

The Scrappers pitchers took over the rest of the way.

Brett Brach (3-2) pitched the first five innings, and Jeremy Johnson and Guido Fonseca finished with two innings each. Fonseca earned his third save.
