MLS roundup \ Saturday’s matches
Crew 2, FC Dallas 0
COLUMBUS — Chad Marshall and Eddie Gaven scored to help the Columbus Crew win their fifth straight game. The Eastern Conference-leading Crew (10-3-9) are 6-0-2 since losing to FC Dallas (6-10-5) on June 20. Marshall scored off a corner kick in the 10th minute. He outjumped Atiba Harris at the edge of the 6-yard box to take a feed from Robbie Rogers and put a header past goalkeeper Dario Sala. Gaven entered in the 75th minute and scored unassisted 12 minutes later with a shot from 17 yards. William Hesmer had only one save for Columbus, but it preserved the 1-0 lead in the 72nd minute when he pushed a header from Jeff Cunningham over the crossbar. Reigning league MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto returned for the Crew after a hamstring strain kept him out four matches. Barros, second in the MLS with 10 goals, came on in the 90th minute to a standing ovation.
Toronto FC 2, United 0
TORONTO — Dwayne De Rosario scored for the fourth straight game to lift Toronto FC to a victory over D.C. United. Toronto (8-7-6) jumped two points ahead of D.C. (6-5-10) for third place in the Eastern Conference.
United, who sat atop the East last month, fell to 1-5-6 on the road. They are unbeaten at home. De Rosario broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute, heading home a pass from Sam Cronin for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Toronto failed to win its previous three matches (0-1-2) even though Rosario scored once in each. Rookie O’Brian White, a Toronto-area native, scored his first MLS goal to double the lead in the 66th minute. The fourth overall pick in this year’s SuperDraft took a one-touch pass from Nana Attakora just outside the 6-yard box and smashed a rising shot past D.C. goalkeeper Josh Wicks.
Chivas USA 2, New York 0
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Maykel Galindo scored off a feed from Chukwudi Chijindu in the 15th minute, and Eduardo Lillingston added a goal late in added time in Chivas USA’s victory over the reeling New York Red Bulls. Chivas USA (9-7-3) snapped a five-game losing streak and moved into a tie with Colorado for third place in the Western Conference. The beleaguered Red Bulls, an MLS-worst 2-16-4, dropped their sixth straight league match and are winless in 14 consecutive MLS games — and 16 overall matches — since beating San Jose on May 8. Zach Thornton made four saves for his eighth shutout of the season.
