ON THE SIDE...

FILING DEADLINE: Thursday is the filing deadline for those wanting to run in the November general election for nonpartisan positions such as township trustee and school board member. Those wanting to run for those positions only need the valid signatures of 25 eligible voters.

Major Democratic event: Thursday is also a big day for Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras. He’s hold his first major fundraiser as chairman at Fellows Riverside Gardens’ D.D. and Velma Davis Center in Youngstown. Tickets for the event are $500. Those wanting to attend a private gathering with the guests of honor need to pay another $500.

The event features the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, the Ohio House speaker and a number of other high-level Democrats. The goal is to raise $100,000. A few of those attending complained to me about the price including one who sarcastically called “Betras’ cotillion.”
