Kennywood to add coaster

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (AP) — Kennywood Park near Pittsburgh is planning a new roller coaster that will take riders from zero to 50 mph in three seconds.

Kennywood spokesman Jeff Filicko says the as-yet unnamed coaster, which will be ready next year, uses new coaster technology to achieve the rocketlike start.

The coaster will replace the Turnpike, a slow ride that uses individual cars on a track.

The Turnpike, which was installed in 1966, will be moved to another location.

The new coaster will also take riders upside down three times after a 95-foot vertical climb and drop.

It will be the amusement park’s seventh roller coaster.

After a high-speed launch, riders will experience a vertical ascent to 95 feet before a brief cliffhanger pause at the top and a 90- degree drop.
