GlenBridge Enhancement Project gets under way

staff report

BOARDMAN — County officials have kicked off the GlenBridge Enhancement Project, which will rehabilitate the 57-year-old, four-lane bridge that carries Glenwood Avenue over the Newport Drive entrance to Mill Creek Park.

The work, which began Monday, is being paid for by federal money, including stimulus funds, and by county money.

On Wednesday, Mahoning County Engineer Richard Marsico presided over a project kickoff news conference at the 32-foot-long, single-span steel beam bridge.

Last Thursday, the county commissioners awarded a $435,900 contract for the project to Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Co. of Youngstown.

The project includes painting all of the bridge’s structural steel, replacement and extension of the bridge railings, installation of decorative lamp posts at the four bridge corners and repair and cleaning of the bridge’s stone substructure.

To make the area more pedestrian-friendly, the project also includes installation of a nearby sidewalk loop along the east side of Glenwood Avenue, the north side of Mill Creek Drive and the west side of Brookwood Road.

The new sidewalks will connect to a loop of sidewalks in Newport Glen.

The improvements are designed to be consistent with the character of the historic Newport Glen neighborhood and the park.
