‘Tea party’ planned to protest government spending, taxation

STAFF REPORT

CANFIELD — A “tea party” to protest federal government spending and taxation will be at 6 p.m. Friday in Canfield on the green at the intersection of U.S. Route 224 and state Route 46.

The Tri-County TEA (Taxed Enough Already) is organizing the event, designed to urge the federal government to be fiscally responsible. Topics include concerns about government spending and proposed national health-care changes.

The event is open to the public.

Similar “tea parties” have taken place throughout the nation. While the events, including the one planned in Canfield, are billed as not being political, the speakers are typically Republicans.

Those scheduled to speak at Friday’s event in Canfield include Becky Burke, a failed 2008 Republican candidate for Columbiana County commissioner who operates the Faith Place in East Liverpool; Tracey Winbush, a talk-show host and a consultant to the Mahoning County Republican Party; Dr. Donald Allen, who is running next year as a Republican for the 6th Congressional District; Wayne Herrod, a Constitution educator; Henry Nemenz, a local business owner; Jon Arnold, investment broker; and Roger and Earl Martig, dairy farmers.

A similar event was July 3 in Hanoverton. Among the speakers at that event were Columbiana County Republican Chairman Dave Johnson, David Zanotti of the American Policy Round Table, a conservative group, and Ohio House Republican Leader William Batchelder.
