Cavs to sign Powe for 2 years

CLEVELAND — All signs point to Leon Powe being the newest Cavalier and it could happen as early as today.

According to multiple NBA sources, Powe flew to Cleveland from California on Tuesday and was scheduled to meet with team officials and doctors Tuesday night and this morning. If everything goes to plan, Powe is set to sign a two-year, $1.77 million contract with the team.

The second year, which is at the league minimum for a player of Powe’s experience, will be a team option.

The 6-foot-8 Powe, who is 25, averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 70 games for the Celtics last season.

It is the sharing of a risk by both sides, with Powe likely not to return from a serious left knee injury until around February. He had ACL reconstruction and a microfracture procedure on May 5.

Gasol has surgery

MADRID — Lakers center Pau Gasol had surgery on his left index finger after an injury during practice with Spain’s national team. He will be sidelined at least three weeks.

The Spanish basketball federation said Tuesday that Gasol damaged a ligament in his non-shooting hand Monday while blocking a shot. He will wear a splint for 20 days, but the federation did not say if he will play in the European Championship in Poland, which starts Sept. 7.

Hawks’ Williams “100 percent”

ATLANTA — Marvin Williams says he is fully recovered from injuries which limited him in the playoffs, and Atlanta’s newly re-signed forward says he’s already looking forward to training camp.

Williams says he is “100 percent” recovered from back and wrist injuries.

Wizards sign Oberto

WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards say they have signed forward-center Fabricio Oberto, giving the team added frontcourt depth.

The 6-foot-10, 245-pound Oberto averaged 3.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in four seasons with San Antonio. The Spurs traded Oberto to Detroit this summer as part of a five-player deal; the Pistons then waived Oberto.

Oberto helped the Spurs win the 2007 NBA title and Argentina win a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.

“Fabricio is a proven winner with extensive playoff experience,” Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said.
