Charged in assault

BOARDMAN — A Youngstown man was to appear today in Mahoning County Area Court to face charges of felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Ruben Garcia Jr., 24, of Hazeltine Avenue, is accused of threatening his girlfriend with a machete. Police were called about 11:15 p.m. Sunday to a house on Melbourne Avenue. The man, identified as Garcia, had left the home heading northbound on Market Street. Police stopped the car he was driving on Market.

The victim, 19, told police that she was sitting on the back deck of the Melbourne home with seven other people when Garcia called on her cell phone. Garcia then came to the house, slammed the machete into the deck railing next to her head and then put it against her neck, saying he would cut off her head, the report said.

The woman started to walk away and tried to call 911, but the phone was taken from her. He then put the machete into his car and fled.

Culvert to be replaced

STRUTHERS — The city will close Fifth Street from Spring Street to Creed Street to all but local traffic at 7 a.m. Thursday for the Fifth Street Culvert Replacement Project.

Temporary closing

NEW SPRINGFIELD — The portion of Beard Road between state Route 165 and the Columbiana County line will be closed for culvert replacement from Monday through Aug. 21.

Architectural study

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center will have “An Architectural Adventure” from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 19. Students age 8 to 14 will tour Wick Park and downtown Youngstown to study outstanding buildings, their famous occupants and their style of architecture. Community-day events

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Mahoning Business Association and New Castle are sponsoring a Mahoningtown Community Day on Sunday at Darlington Park. Events begin with a worship service at 10:30 a.m. Also scheduled are train rides from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., a flag- raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m., music by the Dante DiThomas Orchestra from noon to 1:30 p.m., Paradox from 2 to 3:30, a performance by St. Marguerite’s Blue Coat Band from 4 to 5:30, and entertainment by the Lawrence County Community Band from 6 to 7:30.

Outreach for veterans

GROVE CITY, Pa. — A veterans outreach will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 220, 415 South Broad St., Mercer County officials announced. Representatives of the VA Health System, Pennsylvania CareerLink and the Mercer County Veterans Affairs office will be present to answer questions, assist in health enrollment and veterans’ employment issues. Those attending should bring military-discharge papers.

Tussle in grocery store

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are looking for the man who tussled with a city police officer in a grocery store over the weekend.

A man was asked to leave the Save-A-Lot store on South Avenue on Sunday afternoon because he was not wearing a shirt, a violation of the store’s policy. The man tried to hit the officer in the face. Reports say someone grabbed the officer from behind as he struggled with the shirtless man; the men then fled the store.
