Childs’ home run guides Scrappers past Vermont, 7-6

WINOOSKI, Vt. — Dustin Childs homered to lead off the top of the 11th inning and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers survived a poor defensive outing to beat Vermont 7-6 in 11 innings in a New York-Penn League game Sunday.

Mahoning Valley (33-18) has won 11 of its last 13 and has the best record in the NYPL.

But the Scrappers committed six errors on Sunday, including three in the eighth inning to allow the Lake Monsters to tie the game at 6 with two unearned runs.

Cory Burns (3-0) pitched 32‚Ñ3 innings of shutout relief, giving up just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts to get the win.
