WINOOSKI, Vt. — Rafael Vera and Jason Kipnis each hit their first home runs of the season and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers got back in the win column in a big way, jumping on the Vermont Lake Monsters for a 9-0 win in a New York-Penn League game on Saturday.

Preston Guilmet (5-2) started and had his finest outing of the season, striking out 10 over five innings and surrendering just one hit and one walk.

Austin Adams pitched three no-hit innings, striking out two and walking three, while Antwonie Hubbard closed it out by striking out the side in the ninth.

Kyle Smith had three hits and scored a run for the Scrappers (32-18), who saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday night. Jordan Henry added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Kipnis had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run, Juan Aponte had two hits and an RBI and Jesus Brito had two hits, two walks and scored twice.

Mahoning Valley had 15 hits but stranded 13 baserunners, batting just 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Following today’s game, the Scrappers will return home for a three-game series with Brooklyn (31-19) in a matchup of the two best teams in the NYPL.
