YOUNGSTOWN — The Men of Valor celebration is planned at 10:45 a.m. Aug. 16 at Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., where Michael H. Harrison Sr. is pastor.

Pastor T.J. Thomas of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Toledo will be guest pastor.

Alumni Mass

GIRARD — St. Rose School Alumni Association will celebrate the Feast Day of St. Rose with an alumni Mass at 9 a.m. Aug. 23 at St. Rose Church, 48 E. Main St. After Mass, a reception will be in the school, where there will be a continental breakfast and tour.

School and parish leaders, along with several alumni, have organized an official alumni association in preparation for the 100th anniversary of St. Rose School in 2013. Events are being planned for the centennial celebration.

Revival planned

FARRELL, Pa. — New Hope Baptist Church, 909 Lee Ave., will have a “soul winning” revival at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with Elder Tyrone Steals of Beacon Liberty Street Church of God in Christ, Meadville, Pa.

A youth program with mime ministries and music will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Pastor Clevon Dukes of the host church will conclude the revival at 11 a.m. Aug. 16.

At St. Paul’s

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Rev. Dana L. Zartman will preach at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave., at 10 a.m. Sunday on the topic, “Loose Lips Sink Ships,” based on James 3:1-12. He is a former pastor of East Side Church in Sharon and an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Disciples and the U.C.C. denominations are ecumenical partners.

Refreshments will follow the service.

The Men’s Fellowship will travel to Titusville, Pa., on Aug. 18 to honor the achievements of Edwin Drake, a warden in the Episcopal church, who built the world’s first oil well in 1859 in Titusville. The Drake Well Museum (www.DrakeWell.org) is celebrating its 150th anniversary. There is an admission fee.

Appointment by bishop

YOUNGSTOWN — Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown has appointed the Rev. Bernard Gaeta as associate pastor at St. Nicholas Church, 764 Fifth St., effective Aug. 1.

Father Gaeta, a native of Altoona, Pa., completed seminary studies at St. Paul Theologate and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He was ordained Sept. 1, 1973, for Franciscan Friars Third Order Regular. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Youngstown in May 1988.

Father Gaeta has served as administrator at St. Michael Church in Windham; theology teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren; associate pastor at parishes in Minneapolis and Altoona, and at St. Christine Church, St. James Church in Warren and St. Paul Church in North Canton; and pastor at Mother of Sorrows Church in Ashtabula. He served as an Army Chaplain at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

He most recently served as pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville and St. Aloysius Church in East Liverpool. He is an advocate at the Diocese of Youngstown Tribunal and is a member of the Priests’ Council.

Fundraiser set

BOARDMAN — Bruce McKenzie, owner of Philly Steak, 8414 Market St., will sponsor a fundraiser for Pray 3 Days, which will be Sept. 10-12 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown. He will donate a percentage of each purchase from his shop starting Monday through Aug. 24.

Pray 3 Days is a community prayer event that is being held in conjunction with Flying High Inc., a nonprofit organization.

Worship conference

WARREN — Mahoning Valley District Churches of God in Christ Music Department will have a praise and worship conference at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Community Church of God in Christ, 310 Austin Ave. S.W.

Special guest is evangelist Sharon Jackson, international director of Send Judah First C.O.G.I.C. Music Department Worldwide, Memphis, Tenn.

Registration is $20 a person and $10 for those 18 and younger.

Animal blessing

BOARDMAN — Disciples Christian Church, 5654 Boardman-Canfield Road, will have a blessing of animals worship at 10 a.m. Aug. 16. Dr. Thomas Madden will conduct the service. Participants may bring a live animal or photo of one or a stuffed animal. Contact the church at (330) 758-8189 to register. Pet owners are responsible for the control of animals, which should be leashed or caged.

Diocesan guild

AUSTINTOWN — The diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will have its monthly gathering Aug. 19 at St. Joseph Church, 4545 New Road. The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. and Mass at 10.

Musical performance

AUSTINTOWN — The Gospel Echoes Quartet will perform at 6 p.m. Aug. 16 at Austintown Baptist Church, 1180 S. Raccoon Road. An offering will be taken.

Feast Day Mass

YOUNGSTOWN — St. Stephen of Hungary Church will observe a Feast Day Mass at 11 a.m. Aug. 16 with an outdoor procession, weather permitting. A catered luncheon at noon will follow Mass. The event, by reservation only, will feature Swiss steak. Tickets will be sold after Mass this weekend or call the church at (330) 743-1905. The cost is $10 for adults, $3 for children from 4 to 10 years old and free for those 3 and younger.

Youth revival

YOUNGSTOWN — St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, 620 North Ave., will have a youth revival next week at the church.

Speakers will be: Monday, the Rev. Sam Holmes, associate minister at St. Peter’s; Tuesday, the Rev. Frank Christian, associate minister at New Grace Baptist Church; Wednesday, the Rev. Maralana Martin, associate minister at St. Peter’s; Thursday, the Rev. Sylvia Jennings of Oak Baptist Church; and Friday, the Rev. Dion Holmes, pastor of Christian Love Baptist.

Youth program

YOUNGSTOWN — Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will have a youth program at 4 p.m. Sunday. The speaker will be the Rev. Sylvia Jennings of Oak Baptist Church.

Bell tower fundraiser

CANFIELD — Don Christensen, senior pastor of Canfield United Methodist Church, will pedal 100 miles Aug. 15 across Mill Creek MetroParks bikeway in what he is calling the “Century Ride.” Rain date is Aug. 22.

The ride is a fundraiser for the church bell tower, which is need of repair. The bell tower needs to be repointed and the mortar redone. The church was dedicated in May 1909 but the building is older.

Church members are making pledges for the project; community members interested in preserving a part of history also may donated. Other bicyclists are invited to join the ride, which will start at 7 a.m. at Kirk Road Trailhead at the intersection of Kirk Road and South Turner Road.
