Scrappers sweep ValleyCats

TROY, N.Y. — Keith Bellows homered for the second straight game — giving him six on the season — and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their seventh straight game, defeating the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-1 in a New York-Penn League game on Thursday.

Mahoning Valley (31-17), which completed a three-game sweep, has won 11 of its last 13 games. It leads Williamsport in the Pinckney Division by 31‚Ñ2 games.

The Scrappers scored their other run in the third, when Kyle Smith hit a one-out triple and scored on Greg Folgia’s RBI single. Folgia and Smith each finished with two hits.

Scrappers starter Clayton Cook (3-2) surrendered one run in 51‚Ñ3 innings, striking out four and walking two to get the win.

Nick Kirk tossed three innings of shutout relief, walking one and striking out one.

Guido Fonseca came on in the ninth with runners at the corner and one out, retiring the final two batters for his second save.

Dallas Keuchel (0-2) started and surrendered both runs in six innings to get the loss for Tri-City.
