Roth Bros. split 2 in NABF


YOUNGSTOWN — Roth Brothers of the Youngstown Class AA League won one game and lost one in the first day of the NABF Major Division regional tournament on Thursday.

Roth opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Blackwolves before losing to St. John’s 8-0.

Roth is scheduled to face Canton Walthers today at Oakland Field at 10 a.m. in the double elimination tournament.

Against the Blackwolves, Roth was led by Rob Tamburro with three hits, including a double, and Eric Jones with two hits.

George Rohan added a triple and single and two RBIs, while John Habuda had a pair of singles and Rick Gozur hit a double.

John Hay pitched a complete-game seven hitter for the win.

Roth scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the third.

Against St. John’s, Roth was held to six hits. Mike Sikorski hit a double and single for Roth.

Mike Herman hit a solo home run for St. John’s.

In other first-round games, St. John’s defeated Steves Sports 4-1; Canton Walthers defeated Berea Bluesox 4-0, and Pontiac defeated Tri-County 7-2.

In the second round, Brunswick defeated Canton Walthers 3-2, Steves Sports eliminated Cleveland Blackwolves 5-4, and Berea Bluesox eliminated Tri-County 7-3.

Today’s schedule begins at 10 a.m. At Pemberton/Donnell Park, Brunswick (1-0) plays Pontiac (1-0), while at Roosevelt Park, Steves Sports (1-1) plays Berea Bluesox (1-1).

St. John’s (2-0) picked up a bye into the fourth round.

The bracket will be redrawn after the 10 a.m. games, with round four games scheduled for 2 and 5 p.m. at Pemberton/Donnell Park.

Little League

The Howland 10-11 baseball team defeated Clyde, 16-0, at the state tournament in Chesapeake.

Howland was scheduled to play North Canton in an elimination-round game Thursday night, with the winner advancing to face Hamilton.
