Blood donors to get chance at gift card worth $1,000

The Northern Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross is offering August blood and platelets donors a chance to win $1,000 in groceries.

All donors automatically will be entered in a drawing to win a $1,000 grocery gift card.

Volunteer blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in 57 local hospitals.

A single blood donation can help save the lives of up to three patients, including individuals facing heart surgery, chemotherapy recipients and women suffering from complications during childbirth, said Katy Berger, of the Northern Ohio Region.

Donors must be at least age 17, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health. Donors must present positive identification.

The Northern Ohio Region serves 19 counties and needs to collect about 900 units of blood a day to meet patient needs.
