Ohio Dems propose end same-day voting window

COLUMBUS (AP) — Election changes proposed by Ohio House Democrats include the end of a weeklong early voting window that has allowed people to register and cast a ballot the same day.

A bill introduced Tuesday, when school levies and other issues were voted on around the state, also would virtually eliminate such special elections. To cut costs, tax matters and other questions could be decided only during the usual May primaries or November elections.

The legislation has the support of Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and is largely based on proposals from summits the elections chief held in December and March to study Ohio voting practices.

Democrats control the Ohio House. A different elections overhaul measure has been offered in the Republican-led Senate.
